Baptisms

Baptism is the sacrament by which an individual becomes a member of the Christian community.  It is the first of the sacraments and confers the forgiveness of sins.  Adults who are baptized are prepared for the sacrament through what is commonly call the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA).  This is a process that enables the person to be baptized to come to an understanding of the Christian faith and how it is to be lived in our daily lives.  Those who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and who ultimately wish to receive Baptism should Deacon Renato Berzolla.

In the case of children, the preparation for baptism is actually the preparation of the parents who will present their child for baptism.  This preparation is conducted by Fr. Mark D’Silva once each month.  The parents should contact the Receptionist in the Parish Office, who will be happy to assist you in making the necessary arrangements and enrolling you for the pre-baptismal preparation.

Helpful Information

Normally there are to be two Roman Catholic godparents who have received baptism, first communion and confirmation.  However, when this is not possible, at least one godparent must be a Roman Catholic. In this case, the other godparent must be a Baptized Christian. Godparents not from this parish should provide a sponsor certificate to St. Catherine's.

If your family is registered with another parish, the permission of the pastor of other parish is required for baptism to take place at St. Catherine's.

Parents should schedule a brief meeting at a mutually convenient time (i.e., following a Sunday Mass) with one of the priests or deacons prior to attending the pre-baptismal preparation class.

The following questions will be addressed during this informal discussion:

• Do you, as parents of young children, feel welcome in the parish?
• Do you feel you are adequately informed regarding parish activities?
• In what ways would you like to contribute to, and participate in, the life of parish?
• Are you willing to commit yourselves to the ongoing religious education of your children,
and to encourage them to participate in the Church's sacramental life?

To schedule a baptism, please call our Receptionist at 203-637-3661 x310.
